How this directory works
Where the listings come from
We start from public Google Business Profile data for septic-related businesses across Maine, then check each one by hand. There are 62 companies listed right now. The data was last refreshed on 2026-09-25.
What we leave out
- Businesses outside Maine, including same-named towns in other states (there is a Bangor in Pennsylvania).
- Businesses Google marks as closed.
- Town sewer districts and treatment plants, which don't serve private systems.
- Hardware stores, precast tank makers and product suppliers.
- Excavators, plumbers and home inspectors that don't mention septic work anywhere in their listing.
- Duplicate Google records for the same business at the same address.
How companies are ordered
We don't sort by star rating alone, because a 5.0 from three reviews tells you less than a 4.8 from three hundred. Each company's rating is blended with the average across every company here (4.86 stars), as if it had 12 extra average reviews. Companies with lots of reviews keep close to their own rating; companies with few are pulled toward the middle until more reviews come in.
That score only sets the order. The stars and review counts you see are Google's, unchanged.
Town pages
A company appears on a town page if it is based within 35 miles of the town centre. Many travel further, so check the nearby areas too.
Paid placement
Companies can pay to be Featured at the top of one town page. Featured listings are always labelled. Paying never changes a company's rating, review count or position on any other page, and each town has at most one featured spot.
Pictures
The square marks beside each company are generated from its name. They are decoration, not photos. A company that claims its listing can add its own photo.
Not advice
A listing is not an endorsement, and we don't check licences. Maine requires state licences for site evaluators and certification for installers; ask any company for its number.
